When you give attention to a fear, it multiplies and becomes stronger. It becomes like a frenzy of bubbles, overwhelming and confusing. They pull you deeper away from your true self and reality. In the film MASHA is our true form of self, while MARIA is the self trapped in fear. As MASHA notices MARIA coming into existence in her mirror reflection, MASHA begins to lose herself, falling underwater. MARIA takes over MASHA’s reality and multiplies. And while MASHA struggles within a storm of bubbles.
Only as MASHA stops struggling does she clear her mind of MARIA and find her direction upwards. As MASHA resurfaces back to reality, MARIA fades away.
